In a groundbreaking development, the Federal Government has announced the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, due to serious violations of the university laws and failure to comply with directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.
The decision was made following the unilateral appointment of a Vice-Chancellor by the Council Chairman, despite their lack of minimum eligibility for the role. This controversial move resulted in unrest and discord within the university community, prompting the urgent need for intervention to prevent further escalation.
Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized the critical nature of the situation at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, emphasizing the significant risk posed by the Council’s illegal decisions to destabilize the institution further. As part of the dissolution, several key members of the Governing Council, including Amb. Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe and Hon. Hafiz Oladejo, have been removed from their positions.
Furthermore, Professor Bernard Odoh, the Vice-Chancellor who was unlawfully appointed by the dissolved Council, has also been relieved of his duties. Following the university’s founding act, an Acting Vice-Chancellor will be appointed, and a new Governing Council will be constituted promptly to ensure proper governance and adherence to the law.
These transformative actions have been implemented with immediate effect, aligning with the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting good governance, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law within the nation’s educational institutions.
The move signifies a pivotal moment in ensuring the integrity and compliance of university governance, setting a precedent for upholding standards and fostering a conducive environment for learning and growth within the Nigerian education sector.
