The University of Calabar has officially begun its 50th-anniversary celebrations with a colorful launch event led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi. The theme of the anniversary is “50 Years of Impactful Knowledge and Service to Humanity,” highlighting the institution’s growth and contributions to Nigerian academia.
Founded in 1975 after gaining independence from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNICAL has grown from a small campus to a leading academic institution with over 40,000 students and 8,000 staff members. The Vice-Chancellor, in her address, emphasized the importance of reflecting on the university’s journey and achievements over the past five decades.
The anniversary events, set to culminate in March 2025, will include a colloquium, alumni book launch, reunion/homecoming event, anniversary lecture, exhibition, and an awards and fundraising dinner. Additionally, streets, faculties, hostels, and buildings will be renamed in honor of former vice-chancellors and distinguished alumni who have contributed significantly to the university’s success.
Prof. Obi paid tribute to the pioneering leaders of UNICAL, especially the late Prof. Emmanuel Ayandele, the first vice-chancellor, whose vision played a crucial role in shaping the institution. She also acknowledged the important contributions of past leaders and staff members in guiding the university’s development.
With the upcoming launch of new faculties in computing and mass communication, the University of Calabar continues to expand its academic offerings and strengthen its reputation as a world-class institution. The anniversary celebrations will serve as a platform to recognize and celebrate the university’s achievements while looking forward to a promising future.
