The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced plans to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike starting December 2, 2024, over the Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands.
Speaking to journalists, Comrade Abubakar J. Abdullahi, Chairman of ASUP, Kaduna Polytechnic Chapter, expressed the union’s frustration over the government’s inaction despite a 15-day ultimatum issued on October 6.
Abdullahi outlined the union’s grievances, which include the release of the second tranche of the NEEDS Assessment Intervention fund, immediate implementation of the approved 25/35% salary review for public polytechnic staff, and payment of accrued arrears.
“Regrettably, as we passed the deadline of this ultimatum, we are yet to see the necessary actions from the Federal Government to address these pressing demands. The silence and inaction have left us with no option but to consider the possibility of a total shutdown of our institutions,” Abdullahi stated.
The union highlighted that the systemic challenges facing polytechnics, such as funding shortages and poor staff welfare, continue to hamper the delivery of quality education in the country.
The proposed strike threatens to disrupt academic activities across public polytechnics nationwide, impacting thousands of students.
ASUP has called on the Federal Government to take swift and decisive action to meet their demands and prevent the looming industrial action. Meanwhile, students and stakeholders are anxiously awaiting further developments.
