The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has recently announced an increase in tuition fees for undergraduate students for the 2024/2025 academic session. The fee adjustments, as detailed in documents released by the university, range from N372,000 to N782,000, varying by faculties and state of origin.
Previously, the Oyo State government had initiated a 25% reduction in tuition fees for LAUTECH students, with Governor Seyi Makinde making the announcement during a visit to the institution in 2021. Despite the reduction, the recent fee hike has sparked concerns among students and parents, with many expressing dismay and frustration over the sudden financial burden.
While education is often viewed as a key investment in the future and a pathway to prosperity, the unexpected increase in tuition has left many questioning the impact of government investments in the education sector. With substantial allocations earmarked for education annually, stakeholders are seeking clarity on why the burden of rising fees has fallen on LAUTECH students and their families.
Parents have raised objections to the fee hike, citing challenges in meeting the increased financial demands, especially amidst existing economic hardships. As discussions continue on the implications of the fee adjustments, concerns linger about the accessibility of quality education and the intended benefits of government funding in the sector.
