Career uncertainty is becoming a significant challenge for young Nigerians, many of whom find themselves dissatisfied with jobs that do not align with their qualifications or passions. This issue is compounded by a lack of career guidance, which limits individual growth and can impact broader societal development. According to The World Bank, around 7.2% of working-age Nigerians were employed but actively seeking additional work in Q1 2023, highlighting widespread underemployment and career dissatisfaction.
Ayo Bankole Akintojoye, an expert in SME strategy and transformation, took to X (formerly Twitter) recently to share valuable insights on how young Nigerians can navigate career transitions. He emphasized the importance of excelling in one’s current job, regardless of whether it aligns with long-term career goals. Mr. Akintojoye stated that mastering your existing role is the key to gaining leverage and creating opportunities for future career growth.
“If you want to switch to a role you actually like, start by making yourself a star where you are. No company will move a struggling employee to a different role,” Mr. Akintojoye said.
In addition to excelling in current roles, Mr. Akintojoye also highlighted the importance of volunteering, which he believes can provide young professionals with the opportunity to develop crucial skills and gain experience for future roles.
Reflecting on his own journey, he shared, “I spent three years of my undergrad volunteering with at AIESEC, a global student organization that exposed me to incredible work ethic, experience, and networking. It’s where I discovered my passion for corporate strategy, and now I’m committed to offering others the same early start.”
