Choosing a career path may not always align with initial expectations, but hard work and delayed gratification often bring unexpected rewards. This is the inspiring story of Olagoke Balogun, a top graduate in biochemistry from the University of Ilorin, who is now a leading entrepreneur in Africa’s healthy food restaurant industry.
Balogun (@gkbalogs) shared his journey on X (formerly Twitter) in response to a post by Ayo-Bankole Akintujoye (@AyoBankole), sparking widespread admiration and discussion about career changes and following one’s passion.
In his post, Balogun described how he chose to take a restaurant supervisor role with a starting salary of N27,500, despite objections from friends, who thought the job was beneath him. He worked 16-hour shifts from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., giving his all to the job, even though managers and supervisors didn’t get days off.
“I put my all into the job,” Balogun said. “In less than a month, I had mastered everything—from inventory to sales reports and store management—and became an asset to my manager.”
His commitment paid off when, just four months later, Coca-Cola offered him a position in sales. Two years later, he joined Chevron, where his operational expertise further deepened.
“I eventually left Chevron because I had lost the motivation to keep giving my best,” Balogun explained. “And that was something I couldn’t live with.”
Balogun emphasized the importance of giving one’s best at work. “When you give your best, you do yourself a bigger favor than your company,” he said. “Excellence compounds. The more you do excellent work, the more you get used to doing excellent work.”
Today, Balogun is the proud owner of SoFreshNg, one of the leading healthy food restaurant chains in Africa. His journey has inspired many, with reactions from social media followers showing their admiration and support.
