In a scene that could easily be mistaken for a wild game show, students at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) were seen trooping out of their hostels to receive free condoms from the YASH Youth Advocate for Social Health Community Project, sponsored by Gold Circle Condom. The Nigeria Education News, on a casual visit to the campus, witnessed this unusual rush that left us wondering: Is this a university campus or an R-rated festival?
The initiative, while ostensibly promoting safe sex, raises serious questions about the moral compass of our educational institutions. At a time when Nigeria’s education system is gasping for air, with strikes, underfunding, and dwindling academic standards, it appears some are prioritizing latex over learning.
Our investigation revealed that 75% of female students on campuses now consider sex a normal and necessary part of university life. While advocating for safety is commendable, are we inadvertently endorsing campus promiscuity? With Mandela’s wise words echoing in our minds, “We owe our children a life free from fear and violence,” one might wonder if he ever imagined a situation where protection meant more than just a safe learning environment.
To complicate matters, the Nigerian Education Act does not even touch on sex education, and the government recently ordered its removal from the basic education curriculum. This leaves a vacuum where students receive little to no formal guidance on sexuality, creating a breeding ground for initiatives like this to thrive.
The big question remains: Is UNIABUJA’s management aware of this ‘Condom Carnival’? Is this part of an unwritten syllabus, or has the institution unknowingly become a case study for ‘Sexuality 101’? Where exactly are these trysts taking place? In classrooms? In the hostels? Are parents aware that their children might be engaging in more than academic pursuits?
The sight of students gleefully collecting condoms outside their hostels felt like a reality show with the tagline: “Who Wants to Be a Bedroom Millionaire?” The eagerness of the students suggested a broader acceptance of campus hookups as part of university culture.
According to our findings, this initiative aims to reduce sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and promote safe sex among young adults. But is the distribution of condoms enough to address the underlying issues of morality, discipline, and academic focus?
One student, who preferred to remain anonymous, quipped, “Well, it’s better than being unprotected. At least they care about our safety.” This comment, while pragmatic, also highlights the normalisation of casual sex on campuses, where safe sex is considered a win instead of abstinence being the goal.
The YASH initiative might have good intentions, but does good intention justify the means? Are we not slowly creating an environment where sexual engagement is as commonplace as attending lectures or submitting assignments?
The distribution of condoms in a female hostel raises even more questions: Are male students being allowed into the female hostels? Are there private ‘study sessions’ happening behind closed doors? And if so, is the university management turning a blind eye or genuinely unaware?
University hostels are meant to be sanctuaries for students—a place of rest, study, and safety. When such initiatives penetrate these spaces, are we not risking turning hostels into experimental hubs for adult content?
Parents who believe they have sent their children to school to acquire knowledge may be shocked to find out that sex education, albeit informally, is part of the hidden curriculum. When did ‘student’ become synonymous with ‘bedmate’?
A more troubling angle is the lack of a structured sex education curriculum in Nigerian schools. With the Federal Government’s directive to remove sex education from the basic education curriculum, students are left to learn about sex from peers, social media, and now, condom distributors.

UNIABUJA’s management must also clarify its stance. Is this initiative endorsed by the university? If so, what other steps are being taken to guide students morally and academically? And if not, why is it happening on their watch?
While it is true that university students are adults and should make informed choices, institutions have a role in shaping these choices positively. Encouraging abstinence, promoting responsible behaviour, and creating awareness of the consequences of unprotected sex should be priorities.
The sad truth is that many parents are unaware of what happens on campus. They expect a safe, nurturing environment where their children can focus on their studies. Discovering that their children might be receiving more than just academic lectures could be a rude awakening.
The conversation around sex and youth is not one to shy away from, but it must be handled with caution. Initiatives that focus on only the physical aspect without addressing the emotional, psychological, and societal impacts are only providing half-baked solutions.
Universities should be centres of excellence, not centres of ‘experience’. The focus should be on building future leaders, not fostering an environment where sexual exploration is at the forefront of campus life.
Perhaps it is time for stakeholders in the education sector to review campus policies. If sex is happening on campus, it is crucial to create safe spaces for discussions, provide proper guidance, and ensure that health and wellbeing are prioritised without compromising moral standards.
The YASH initiative’s condom distribution might have stirred up a conversation, but it is a conversation that must lead to action. The Ministry of Education, university management, parents, and even the students themselves must take responsibility.
Sexual health is important, but so is the education and moral upbringing of the students. A balanced approach is necessary—one that doesn’t make condoms the most memorable part of a university experience.
