The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), has confirmed the sudden death of Nwachukwu Omiko, a final-year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Omiko tragically collapsed while participating in a friendly football match on the university campus on Wednesday.
According to the university’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Ubadire Agua, Omiko’s fellow students attempted to resuscitate him before notifying the University Health Services. He was quickly transported to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia, but sadly pronounced dead on arrival.
The news of Omiko’s passing has sent shockwaves through the university community, with students and faculty expressing grief and disbelief. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, conveyed his profound condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues. “He described Omiko’s death as a painful loss not only to the university but also to the nation, given his academic potential and promising future,” the statement read.
The university management has called on students to make use of the institution’s medical services upon resumption and to be mindful of their health conditions, especially before engaging in physically demanding activities. This advisory aims to prevent similar incidents in the future.
