The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has once again reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening education in the Niger Delta, describing it as a critical pillar for sustainable development, peacebuilding, and youth empowerment.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, made this known during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Moot Court and Mock Trial Competition for law faculties across universities in the region. The event, part of the Commission’s 25th anniversary celebrations, brought together law students from across the Niger Delta to showcase their advocacy skills and intellectual depth.
Dr. Ogbuku, who was represented by the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Boma Iyaye, emphasised that education remains the foundation for capacity building, poverty alleviation, and the eradication of violence in the region. He encouraged participants to engage in constructive debates that reflect regional realities and offer solutions to inform future legislation and policy.
Referencing Mahatma Gandhi, he said, *“Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, for full effort is full victory.”* He stressed that the intellectual strength of the youth is a more effective tool for regional advancement than militancy or violence.
Dr. Ogbuku also highlighted NDDC’s strategic investments in the education sector, including foreign scholarship programmes, infrastructure development, and human capacity building. He noted that under the current leadership of Chiedu Ebie, the Commission’s interventions are aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises youth development and educational empowerment.
“Last year’s competition was a spectacular showcase of some of the brightest young legal talents in the region,” Ogbuku noted, “and it reaffirmed our focus on youth engagement and leadership development.”
Also speaking, the Acting Director of Legal Services at the NDDC, Mr. Victor Arenyeka, reiterated the importance of moot court and mock trial competitions in legal training. He stated that this year’s competition features legal simulations tailored to the Niger Delta context, covering issues such as environmental law, oil and gas regulation, sustainable development, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) frameworks.
He added that the success of last year’s event, which was widely adjudged one of the best moot competitions in Nigeria, has spurred increased participation and anticipation for this year’s edition.
With about 20 universities expected to participate, the 2025 Moot Court and Mock Trial Competition is poised to further strengthen NDDC’s efforts in promoting legal education and fostering intellectual development among youths in the region.
