The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin-Ekiti, has officially commenced admissions into its newly approved academic programs, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of tertiary education in Nigeria. The institution, one of the country’s newest federal universities, is set to welcome its pioneer batch of students in the 2024/2025 academic session.
Located in the heart of Iyin-Ekiti in Ekiti State, the university is poised to specialize in science, technology, engineering, and environmental studies. According to information from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the university’s take-off programs span four major faculties, all tailored to meet the rising demand for professionals in emerging sectors.
The faculties include Natural and Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Sciences, and Computing and Information Technology. Each faculty offers a wide range of undergraduate degree programs, with an emphasis on hands-on learning, innovation, and research. The university authorities say this structure is designed to produce graduates with technical and problem-solving skills required in the 21st century.
The Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences features departments such as Microbiology, Geology, Forensic Science, Biotechnology, Statistics, and Physics. The Engineering faculty, on the other hand, will offer courses including Biomedical Engineering, Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the cutting-edge field of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering.
In the area of environmental studies, the university is introducing programs like Urban and Regional Planning, Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology, Forestry and Climate Studies, Quantity Surveying, and Architecture. Officials say the goal is to address the pressing environmental and urbanization challenges facing Nigeria and the wider West African region.
Meanwhile, the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology is arguably the most forward-looking, with programs such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science and Economics, Software Engineering, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. This faculty aims to equip students with the digital skills and tools necessary to thrive in today’s tech-driven world.
With academic preparations already underway, the university has called on qualified candidates across the country to seize the opportunity and apply. While this marks the beginning of a new chapter in Iyin-Ekiti’s history, it also represents a broader push by the federal government to expand access to specialized higher education in science and technology.
