There was tension in the Moremi Estate area of Ile-Ife, Osun State, in the early hours of Monday after suspected armed robbers attacked D&D Hostel and left a student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) seriously injured.
The incident, which occurred between 12:45 a.m. and 1:00 a.m., is the third reported robbery in the Moremi axis in recent weeks.
The victim, a Part 4 student from the Department of Material Science, was said to have suffered a deep machete cut to the head during the attack. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment and later discharged.
Monday’s attack has thrown the hostel community into panic, with many students expressing concern over the rising insecurity in the area.
In response, Comrade Olaore David, Director of Security and Project Delivery to the National Vice President (South-West) of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), visited the scene alongside the Chief Security Officer of the Great Ife Students’ Union, AbdulRoheem Arogundade.
They were joined by officers from the Moore and Modakeke Divisional Police Stations.
During the visit, the team met with the assaulted student and other residents, who shared details of the incident.
Speaking to journalists, Olaore—popularly known as Kolokolo—assured the student community of renewed efforts to improve security in the area.
“We’ve started joint surveillance with the police to track the routes these criminals are using,” he said.
He also revealed that a dedicated emergency line would soon be made available to enable students report suspicious activities or seek help during emergencies.
