The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has pledged to immortalize the late Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist who tragically lost his life while rescuing a colleague from a lion attack at the university’s zoological garden.
Speaking at a one-day workshop organized in his honor on the first anniversary of his passing, OAU Registrar, Mr. Adetunji Bakare, emphasized that the gathering was not to mourn Olawuyi’s death, but to celebrate his heroism and selflessness.
“Olawuyi’s courage in standing in the face of danger to save another life is a testament to his unwavering dedication and sacrifice. The university will ensure that his legacy endures,” Bakare stated at the event, held at the Pit Theatre, Department of Dramatic Arts, OAU.
The workshop, titled “Workplace Safety Awareness,” was organized by the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) as part of efforts to promote safer work environments for university staff.
It was reported that Olawuyi died on February 19, 2024, while attempting to rescue a junior colleague who was being attacked by a lion during feeding.
Speaking on behalf of NAAT, the association’s National President, Mr. Ibeji Nwokoma, described Olawuyi as a martyr who gave his life in service to others. Represented by the immediate past National Treasurer, Dr. Rachel Hassan-Olajokun, Nwokoma urged the university to further honor Olawuyi’s memory by renaming the university’s zoo after him.
The university management reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing workplace safety and creating a more secure environment for staff, ensuring that such tragic incidents do not occur again.
As OAU moves forward with plans to immortalize Olawuyi, his bravery remains an enduring symbol of selfless service and dedication to humanity.
