A delegation of 60 Nigerian student-athletes is en route to Algiers, Algeria, to take part in the first-ever African School Games, scheduled from July 26 to August 5, 2025. The group left from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, boarded with their coaches and representatives from the National Sports Commission (NSC), marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s sporting development.
The event, organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and endorsed by the NSC, includes competition in ten disciplines: athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, canoeing, football, swimming, table tennis, cycling, and taekwondo.
NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the Games as a landmark for Nigeria’s grassroots sports development, emphasising the government’s backing alongside the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), school authorities, and parents to ensure robust athlete support.
Following in the footsteps of successful national sporting events like the 2007 All-Africa Games held in Algiers, where Nigeria was the top-performing country in athletics and the country fielded thousands of competitors across 24 sports, Nigeria’s participation signifies renewed commitment to nurturing future sports talent from school age.
The NSC delegation that accompanied the team expressed confidence in the athletes’ readiness and competitive spirit. The arrival of Nigeria’s team and officials to the Games Village is expected by July 23, as confirmed by organisers.
The NSC extended its best wishes ahead of the trip, stating, “Team Nigeria’s representation in Algiers is a step toward building a sports economy focused on youth this is the future of Nigerian sports.” Nigerian fans and stakeholders await updates on team performances throughout the ten-day tournament.
