The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has issued an official disclaimer over a dress code document that recently went viral, purportedly approved by the university’s Governing Council. The University administration clarified that although the Council has indeed sanctioned a dress code for students, the circulating version is not the authentic or approved one.
In a statement dated 25th July, 2025, and signed by the Registrar, K. A. Bakare, the institution described the viral document as misleading and unofficial. According to the release, the document in question does not reflect the content or intentions of the approved dress code designed by the University authorities.
The Registrar stated that the official version of the dress code will be released in due course and will be directed at enhancing academic sensibilities, social decency, and ethical standards among students. This aligns with the core values of the university as encapsulated in its motto, “For Learning and Culture.”
OAU emphasized that the Council’s intention in approving a dress code is not to police student fashion arbitrarily but to instill a culture of responsibility, modesty, and discipline. The administration aims to guide students to dress in a manner befitting a prestigious academic environment and to reflect the values that the university stands for.

Following the confusion generated by the viral document, the University urges the general public, students, and stakeholders to disregard the circulating content. The administration reassured all concerned that the authentic dress code guidelines will be published soon through appropriate official channels.
The administration also noted the importance of clear communication between the University and its students, particularly on sensitive matters such as policy implementation. Students are advised to await official updates and refrain from reacting to unverified information.
This incident underscores the rising challenge of misinformation in the digital age, where unofficial content can rapidly gain traction. OAU is therefore reiterating its commitment to transparency and due process in the formulation and dissemination of institutional policies.
As the academic community anticipates the release of the official dress code, many believe the university must ensure student engagement and provide a clear framework that balances personal freedom with institutional integrity. The university community now awaits the finalized document that will uphold OAU’s identity as a centre for learning and culture.
