The Rector of Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree, Alhaji Kehinde Alabi, has announced that the Students Union Government (SUG) election for the 2024/2025 academic session will be held in early September 2025. The declaration was made through the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Tope Abiola, during a crucial stakeholder meeting on Thursday with the Caretaker Committee, Faculty Presidents, Departmental Presidents, and Class Governors.
Dr. Abiola explained that the management is fully committed to conducting a credible, free, and fair SUG election. He emphasized that the upcoming election would be conducted electronically, making physical voting obsolete in the institution’s democratic process.
According to him, “Management of the institution has concluded to conduct an online election whereby the electorate will have the opportunity to cast their vote on their phones or through any other digital platform for the candidate of their choice.” He stressed that digital voting is now the standard at OSPOLY, given the school’s strong emphasis on ICT and innovation.
Dr. Abiola noted that all necessary preparations had been put in place to ensure the smooth execution of the e-election, describing the institution as a model for technological advancement and a pace-setter for political engagement in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
He further disclosed that the Independent Students Electoral Commission (ISEC) would be constituted in a matter of days. A memo has already been circulated to Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments, requesting nominations for members who will serve on the ISEC.
While reassuring students of the administration’s commitment to a transparent electoral process, Dr. Abiola urged all student leaders to promote peace and ensure a conducive atmosphere before, during, and after the election. He reiterated the importance of unity and civility in student politics.
The Dean also commended the students for their maturity and peaceful behavior since Alhaji Kehinde Alabi assumed office as Rector. He acknowledged that such conduct has significantly contributed to the institution’s smooth academic and administrative progress.
In a related development, Dr. Abiola announced that a seminar would be held next week to guide students on how to apply for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The seminar will be conducted Faculty by Faculty and is aimed at equipping students with practical knowledge about accessing the loan scheme.
With the digital election set to commence in September and preparations in top gear, OSPOLY stands poised to once again showcase its technological prowess and democratic values through a student-led electoral process.
