The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited has completed the second phase of its school renovation project in Rivers State, reaffirming its strategic commitment to education and sustainable community development.
According to a statement by the company’s General Manager for External Relations and Sustainable Development, Mrs. Sophia Horsfall, the newly commissioned phase includes comprehensive upgrades at Model Boys Secondary School in Omoku and Community Secondary School in Amadi-Ama, Port Harcourt. The renovations form part of NLNG’s four-pillar Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework, which focuses on sustainability, stakeholder engagement, partnership, and shared prosperity.
The infrastructure enhancements were carried out in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Education, aimed at fostering access to quality education in the company’s host communities. Key elements of the project include the construction of modern male and female toilet facilities, Youth Corps members’ lodges, fully renovated and re-equipped science laboratories, the upgrade of five classrooms (two for junior and three for senior students), refurbishment of four administrative blocks, and the construction of a new administrative building for school staff.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, NLNG Managing Director, Dr. Philip Mshelbila represented by Mr. Yemi Adeyemi, Manager of Community Relations and Sustainable Development described the initiative as a critical investment in the future.
“Ensuring the education of our young ones may very well be the biggest insurance for the future. We acknowledge this, and it has been the driving force behind both our past and current interventions,” he said. “Quality education remains the foundation of sustainable national development. This commissioning is evidence of our commitment to human capital development and long-term community impact.”
Adeyemi added that the intervention goes beyond physical infrastructure. “As we invest in educational infrastructure like this, we are not only improving learning environments but also planting the seeds for future leaders, innovators, and professionals. We are proud to contribute meaningfully to the transformation of education in our communities and beyond.”
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu represented by the Director of Secondary Education, Mrs. Alua Adiela commended NLNG for its sustained commitment to education in the state.
“The infrastructure upgrades and enhancements are truly commendable. However, what resonates even more deeply is the spirit behind this intervention,” she said. “NLNG could have confined itself to its core business operations, but instead, it chose to lead with empathy and foresight. This is the kind of corporate leadership our nation so urgently needs.”
She noted that the latest project builds on the success of Phase 1, which delivered similar renovations to schools on Bonny Island and in Port Harcourt. She also highlighted NLNG’s long-standing support for education through various initiatives, including scholarship schemes, institutional partnerships, and technical skill development programmes across Rivers State and Nigeria.
“This initiative is a continuation of that legacy, one that transforms corporate responsibility into tangible, life-changing outcomes for students, educators, and future leaders,” she concluded.
