A 17-year-old girl from Yobe State, Nafisat Abdullah, has brought international recognition to Nigeria by emerging as the overall winner of the TeenEagle English Language Skills Competition, defeating more than 20,000 students from 69 countries.
Representing Nigeria Tulip International College (NTIC), Yobe, Nafisat’s historic win marks the first time a Nigerian girl has claimed victory at the global contest, making her achievement a national milestone and a source of pride for the entire country.
Her exceptional performance in the prestigious international competition is widely seen as a testament to the growing impact of Yobe State’s education reforms under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, FCIA, CON, COMN.
Speaking on the development, Nafisat’s father, Malam Hassan Salihu, commended the Buni-led administration for its unwavering investment in quality education. “Our daughter’s global success would not have been possible without the extraordinary support of Governor Mai Mala Buni for the education sector in Yobe State,” he said.
The TeenEagle competition, known for testing high-level English comprehension, communication, and critical thinking, attracted participants from across six continents. Nafisat’s victory, therefore, not only underscores her individual brilliance but also highlights the quality of instruction and learning opportunities now available in Yobe’s schools.
Observers say the win reflects Yobe’s progress in enhancing access to functional, competitive, and globally relevant education, even as the state continues to recover from the impact of insurgency. Education stakeholders have described Nafisat’s achievement as “proof that Nigeria’s underserved regions, when empowered, can produce world-class talents.”
The result also shines a spotlight on NTIC Yobe and its academic excellence, further validating efforts by the Yobe State Government to provide equal learning opportunities for students regardless of their background or location.
The Yobe State Government has yet to make an official statement on the win, but sources suggest a formal recognition event may be held soon in honour of Nafisat Abdullah.
