The Federal Polytechnic Damaturu has recorded a major milestone in its academic expansion drive as the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has granted the institution approval to introduce a range of new National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes. The approval, which takes effect from the 2025/2026 academic session, was conveyed in a formal letter signed by Dr. Fatima Kabir Umar, the Director of Polytechnic and Allied Programmes at NBTE.
This latest development marks a significant step forward for the institution, reflecting its commitment to diversifying academic offerings and aligning them with industry needs. The newly approved ND programmes are strategically designed to cover a broad spectrum of disciplines in the sciences, arts, technology, and management fields, thereby catering to the academic and career aspirations of prospective students across Nigeria.
The new ND programmes include: Mass Communication, Organic Agricultural Technology, Animal Health and Production Technology, Crime Management, Common and Islamic Law, Environmental Science and Management Technology, Forensic Science, Water Resources Engineering Technology, Cartography and GIS, Health Information Management, Pharmaceutical Technology, Public Technology, and Environmental Health Technology. Each of these courses has been carefully selected to meet evolving societal demands and equip graduates with practical skills for the modern workplace.
Similarly, the HND category has been bolstered with a fresh range of high-demand programmes aimed at building advanced technical competence among graduates. The newly introduced HND courses are Agricultural Extension Management, Marketing, Public Administration, Human Resources Management, Banking and Finance, Science Laboratory Technology (Microbiology option), Cyber Security, Software and Web Development, Networking and Cloud Computing, Science Laboratory Technology (Chemistry option), and Computer Engineering Technology. These programmes are expected to enhance the institution’s ability to produce graduates with specialist expertise in critical sectors of the economy.
In addition to the new approvals, NBTE has further solidified its partnership with Federal Polytechnic Damaturu by granting five-year accreditation, effective from the 2025 session, to 36 existing ND and HND programmes. This re-accreditation covers disciplines such as Agricultural Technology, Accountancy, Business Administration, various engineering specialisations, and Surveying. Such long-term accreditation underscores the institution’s consistent adherence to academic quality and NBTE standards.
Reacting to the development, the Head of Information and Public Relations at the polytechnic, Muhd Nura Nguru Mnipr, emphasised that the approvals represent not just institutional growth but also a strategic alignment with Nigeria’s developmental priorities. According to him, the diverse nature of the new programmes reflects the polytechnic’s vision to bridge skill gaps and prepare graduates who can contribute meaningfully to both the public and private sectors.
Educational stakeholders have also commended the move, noting that the introduction of innovative programmes such as Forensic Science, Cyber Security, Networking and Cloud Computing, and Pharmaceutical Technology demonstrates a forward-thinking approach in anticipating the skill requirements of the future. By merging traditional fields such as Agricultural Extension Management with cutting-edge technology courses, the polytechnic is positioning itself as a centre for both conventional and emerging disciplines.
Prospective students across the country are expected to benefit significantly from the expansion, as the new programmes open up more opportunities for admission and career advancement. Experts believe this will not only increase student enrolment but also boost the institution’s profile as a leading technical and vocational training centre in Nigeria’s North-East region.
The NBTE’s decision comes at a time when polytechnic education is being increasingly recognised as a viable alternative to university degrees, offering more practical, industry-oriented training. With the new ND and HND programmes, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu is well-poised to meet the demands of industries in agriculture, technology, health, law, and management, thereby producing graduates who are job-ready and innovation-driven.
The management of the polytechnic has assured all stakeholders that it will continue to invest in infrastructure, human resources, and teaching facilities to ensure that the newly approved and re-accredited programmes meet global standards. As the 2025/2026 session approaches, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu stands ready to welcome a new generation of students into its expanded academic landscape, reaffirming its place as a dynamic institution committed to excellence in technical education.
