The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) has intensified efforts to encourage its students to take advantage of the Federal Government’s interest-free student loan scheme, describing it as a major opportunity to overcome financial barriers and achieve academic excellence.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Uno Essang Uno, said the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) programme was designed to provide a lifeline for undergraduates who might otherwise struggle to fund their education.
The sensitization forum, organised by the Students Affairs Division in collaboration with the Information Technology Services Unit, provided detailed guidance on the loan’s eligibility criteria, application process, and benefits.
Director of Information Technology Services, Dr. Bala Salihu, revealed that in the 2023/2024 academic session, only 4,282 of the university’s 55,000 students applied for the facility, but all applications were approved. He urged more students to submit applications, cautioning against data entry errors and fraudulent transactions that could delay or prevent disbursement.
Under the NELFUND scheme, the Central Bank of Nigeria pays tuition directly to institutions, while each beneficiary receives ₦20,000 monthly for upkeep. Repayment begins after graduation once the beneficiary secures employment.
