The atmosphere at the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Nasarawa State, was filled with mixed emotions as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shehu AbdulRahman, was spotted signing on the shirts of jubilant graduating students. The act, though simple, carried deep symbolism as it reflected the VC’s support and encouragement while reminding the students to remain disciplined and responsible during their celebrations.

Professor AbdulRahman’s gesture stood out because it was carried out shortly after the university management officially announced a ban on open graduation celebrations within the campus. The ban came as a direct response to a tragic incident where a student lost their life in a tricycle accident during previous graduation festivities. The management’s decision was intended to protect students and maintain order during such memorable occasions.

In his words to the students, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that graduation was not only a time for excitement and merriment but also a period of reflection, gratitude, and responsibility. He called on the fresh graduates to channel their joy into meaningful acts of celebration rather than engaging in risky behaviors that could endanger lives. His signing on their shirts symbolized a fatherly endorsement of their achievement, balanced with a reminder of discipline.

The decision of the management to impose restrictions was met with a mix of reactions from the student community. Some students expressed disappointment at the limitation of their traditional ways of celebrating, while others acknowledged the wisdom behind the move, given the tragic events of the past. For many, the VC’s personal involvement in the celebration softened the blow of the ban and reassured them that their achievements were still recognized.

Observers noted that Professor AbdulRahman’s approach displayed leadership that combined firmness with empathy. By personally joining the students, he communicated that the institution was not against their joy but rather against reckless actions that could tarnish the university’s image or put lives at risk. This balance between discipline and compassion drew praise from several parents and staff members who witnessed the moment.

Graduation celebrations in Nigerian universities are often marked by colorful displays, shirt-signing, group photographs, and at times, noisy processions around campus. However, these events can sometimes spiral into chaos, with road accidents, noise disturbances, or clashes among groups of students. The Federal University of Lafia’s management, therefore, considered its ban as a preventive step to ensure safety and order during the ceremonies.

In addition to the ban, the university authorities advised students to celebrate in private gatherings or off-campus events where necessary safety measures could be ensured. They also cautioned against reckless driving, alcohol abuse, or any activity that could jeopardize the lives of the students and the public. The policy, according to the management, was not designed to suppress student happiness but to guarantee that all graduates lived to enjoy their achievements.

The Vice-Chancellor further urged graduates to carry the values of the university into the larger society. He reminded them that as ambassadors of FULafia, they had a duty to uphold integrity, discipline, and responsibility in their future endeavors. His presence among them was meant to reassure the students that leadership is about guidance, not just enforcement.

Parents and guardians present during the graduation expressed appreciation for the institution’s proactive stance. They highlighted the importance of preserving the lives of the graduates, especially after years of hard work, sacrifice, and financial commitment. Many commended the VC for being present with the students, signing their shirts, and personally passing across the message of moderation and safety.

In conclusion, the Federal University of Lafia’s approach to balancing celebration with caution has set an example for other higher institutions in Nigeria. By banning risky activities while still participating in the joyous traditions of graduation, the management demonstrated a model of leadership that prioritizes student safety without denying them the pride of their achievements. The Vice-Chancellor’s symbolic act of signing shirts will be remembered not just as a moment of joy, but also as a lesson in discipline and responsibility for the graduating class of FULafia.
