HUMOUR, RIVALRY, AND NOSTALGIA: Nigerians Brag About Their Universities On X

In a country where university education is often seen as both a privilege and a pathway to future success, Nigerians have never shied away from showcasing pride in their alma maters. A recent social media trend titled “Brag About Your University” brought this sentiment to life as graduates and current students passionately declared what makes their institutions unique. The conversation, filled with humour, rivalry, and nostalgia, revealed not just the competitive spirit among universities, but also the deep emotional bonds Nigerians form with their schools.

One of the most prominent mentions in the debate was the University of Lagos, popularly known as UNILAG. Tagged “The University of First Choice,” many graduates echoed this slogan with pride. “University of first choice. I won’t say more. Everyone knows,” wrote John Oyesile, a pharmacist, reflecting the confidence often associated with UNILAG alumni. For them, the name alone carries prestige and identity.

But the trend was far from a one-sided celebration of UNILAG. In fact, other universities quickly found their champions. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was loudly represented by alumni who bragged about the campus facilities and traditions. One user boasted that OAU is “the only University with 24 hours electricity,” while another recited the school anthem with pride, noting its rich history of academic culture and its model after University College London.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) was also not left out of the conversation. It was hailed as “the best state university in the country” by one proud graduate. The school, located in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has long been respected for its focus on science and technology, despite facing years of strikes and funding challenges. Yet, for its alumni, LAUTECH remains a symbol of resilience and excellence.

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) community came out strong with their well-known slogan, “Better by far.” This catchphrase has become more than a motto; it is an identity marker for students and alumni. One user simply tweeted “Unilorin… Better by far” showing how the phrase speaks volumes without need for elaboration. For many, UNILORIN’s reputation for academic discipline and minimal strikes is a key point of pride.

Meanwhile, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) also enjoyed its share of spotlight. While some confused it with UNILAG’s “first choice” identity, TASUED alumni highlighted its historical significance as Nigeria’s premier university of education. Others mentioned Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, proudly distinguishing between the two institutions and underlining their unique focus on teacher training.

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) alumni provided perhaps the most colorful testimonies. One described OOU as more than just a school, calling it a “survival bootcamp and greatness factory.” Another noted how the institution prepared them for the real world by teaching resilience, multitasking, and the ability to thrive under pressure. Such comments reflect how some Nigerian universities, beyond academics, serve as character-shaping environments.

For private universities, Babcock University earned recognition as “the first of its kind in Nigeria.” As one of the pioneering private institutions, Babcock has grown into a household name, setting the tone for private-sector involvement in higher education. Alumni boasted about the institution’s discipline, high standards, and Christian values.

Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) was hailed as the “best technology school in Nigeria.” Graduates highlighted its reputation for engineering and applied sciences, emphasizing that the institution has produced some of the country’s leading innovators. “Best technology school in Nigeria,” one graduate proudly affirmed, underscoring the institution’s role in shaping Nigeria’s technological future.

Ekiti State University (EKSU), formerly known as the University of Ado Ekiti, also drew admiration. Alumni argued that it was the best state university in Nigeria, crediting its contributions to knowledge and leadership in the southwest. The constant name changes in its history became part of the bragging rights, signaling endurance through reforms and policy shifts.

Mapoly (Moshood Abiola Polytechnic) and OAU alumni engaged in subtle bragging wars, with Mapoly students shouting “Greatest Mapite!” and others defending the legacies of their own schools. For Polytechnic graduates, joining the trend was a way to remind others that higher education in Nigeria goes beyond traditional universities.

Another interesting twist came from unconventional responses. One user humorously identified the “University of YouTube” (UOY) as their alma mater, suggesting that self-learning and digital platforms also play a growing role in knowledge acquisition. This tongue-in-cheek comment reflected the growing importance of online education in Nigeria’s digital era.

International exposure was also part of the conversation. Some graduates, while defending their Nigerian universities, also boasted about foreign degrees. One user mentioned attending the University of Glasgow, “the 4th oldest university in the English-speaking world,” alongside UNILAG. Such double bragging revealed how Nigerians blend global recognition with local identity.

The University of Abuja also found a place in the bragging contest. Alumni mentioned how the institution emphasized research methodology and academic rigor, combining both humor and seriousness in their comments. “University of Abuja and we did Research Methodology,” one graduate wrote, highlighting a common academic milestone.

Some participants took the opportunity to highlight the infrastructural strengths of their universities. For instance, a UNILAG and UNIAgo graduate noted that their institution boasted the largest ICT center in Nigeria, adding that students could pursue courses across diverse faculties beyond just education. This was a direct jab at schools perceived to have narrower academic offerings.

Underlying the bragging, however, was a sense of healthy rivalry that mirrors Nigeria’s cultural diversity. From OAU’s historical anthem to UNILORIN’s discipline, from TASUED’s educational legacy to FUT Minna’s technological excellence, each university’s alumni were eager to share their experiences. The diversity of voices underscored how higher institutions contribute differently to national development while fostering individual identity.

For many graduates, bragging was less about superiority and more about nostalgia. Whether through electricity supply, name changes, research courses, or polytechnic pride, Nigerians relieved their academic journeys in the most lighthearted way. The conversation showcased that while universities differ in resources, culture, and reputation, they all play a pivotal role in shaping resilience, discipline, and ambition.

In the end, the bragging trend painted a vibrant picture of Nigeria’s higher education landscape. It revealed not just competition among universities, but also pride, memories, and the collective belief in education as a badge of honor. For Nigerians, to brag about one’s university is to brag about identity, survival, and the lifelong lessons learned within the walls of academia.
