The Kano State Government has inaugurated a 14-member committee to oversee the establishment of Gaya Polytechnic, in a major push to expand access to quality tertiary education in the state.
The committee was inaugurated on Thursday by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the event.
According to a statement by the Deputy Governor’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, the move aligns with the administration’s commitment to fulfilling its education promise to the people of Gaya.
The committee is chaired by Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, with Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, as Co-Chairman.
Other members include Prof. Bala Sale D/Tofa, Dr. Muhammad Umar Kibiya, Prof. Auwalu Halliru Arzai, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin Fagge, Engr. Yahaya Abubakar Baba, Prof. Abba Garba Gaya, Dr. Garba Alhaji Adamu, Dr. Surajo Isa Gaya, Halilu Aminu, and Engr. Abubakar M. Adamu.
Shehu Sani will lead the committee’s secretariat, while Dr. Lukuman T. Suraj will serve as Secretary.
Gwarzo tasked the committee with ensuring that academic activities at the institution commence by the next academic session. He said the project reflects the government’s broader vision for educational and socio-economic development.
In his response, Prof. Kurawa pledged the committee’s readiness to deliver on its mandate, citing the members’ experience and expertise as key to achieving its objectives.
The committee is expected to facilitate the passage of the Polytechnic Establishment Bill, secure approvals from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), oversee infrastructure development, recruit staff, process admissions, and engage stakeholders.
The government described the initiative as a major milestone in its drive to transform the state’s education sector and expand opportunities for residents of Gaya and surrounding areas.
