Claim:
Reports circulating online claim that the Kaduna State Government has reinstated the five-day school week in all public schools. The reports quoted the Commissioner for Education, Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, as announcing the decision during a meeting with the Kaduna Government College Old Boys Association. They further stated that the move was aimed at improving learning outcomes and that the government was considering plans to increase teachers’ salaries.
Verdict:
The claim that Kaduna State has restored the five-day school week is False. The policy remains under consultation and has not been officially implemented.
Findings:
Checks by this newspaper show that the claim is misleading. The Kaduna State Ministry of Education, through its official social media platforms, clarified that the five-day school week is still at the proposal stage and has not yet been implemented.
Abdullah Yunus Abdullah, the Senior Special Assistant (New Media) to Governor Uba Sani, also debunked the viral report, stressing that consultations with stakeholders are still ongoing before any policy decision can be reached.
While Professor Sambo did meet with members of the Kaduna Government College Old Boys Association, his remarks about improving education outcomes and addressing issues such as teachers’ welfare were misinterpreted as confirmation of the school week’s restoration.
On the issue of Kaduna Government College being occupied by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Commissioner reportedly explained that the arrangement was originally due to security concerns but that both organisations are expected to move to their permanent sites.
Conclusion:
Until the state government completes its consultations and issues an official directive, the current school week structure remains unchanged.
