One of the major highlights of the congress was the emphasis placed on student advocacy. The president, in his opening remarks, underscored the importance of consistent representation of students’ interests across all chapters. He urged members to be proactive in voicing the needs of students in their respective institutions, stressing that FIBSU was founded to protect and project the welfare of Ibadan students across the country.
Another central issue discussed was the importance of youth participation in governance. President Giwa passionately called on all eligible members of the union to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), describing it as the most practical tool available for youths to influence the nation’s political direction. According to him, beyond protests and advocacy, the ballot remains the strongest voice for young Nigerians determined to shape a brighter future.

In addition to advocacy discussions, the congress also witnessed an important milestone with the official unveiling of the Union’s National Patrons. These patrons, drawn from respected sectors of society, are expected to provide mentorship, guidance, and support for the Union as it continues to expand its influence. Their induction was met with applause and optimism from members present, who saw it as a step towards institutional strengthening.
The congress further featured the inauguration of the Constitution Review Committee, a significant move aimed at restructuring and updating the union’s guiding document to reflect present realities. The committee will be chaired by Comrade Kolade Michael, a seasoned unionist known for his dedication and capacity. This development was welcomed as timely, given the evolving challenges facing students and the need for a modern, adaptable constitution.
To encourage academic excellence and intellectual competitiveness among its members, FIBSU also presented awards and certificates to winners of the inter-chapter debate and quiz competitions. The contests, which saw vibrant participation from various chapters, concluded with the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) local chapters emerging as overall winners. This gesture, the President explained, was designed to reward hard work and inspire other chapters to follow suit.
The presentations were marked with fanfare, as students from the winning institutions expressed gratitude to the union for providing platforms that nurture their talents beyond classroom learning. Many participants noted that the competitions were not only intellectually stimulating but also created bonds of friendship and collaboration among Ibadan students spread across multiple universities.
As the congress progressed, several members voiced their commitment to strengthening the union’s footprint across Nigeria. They resolved to consolidate on past achievements while pursuing new initiatives in areas such as student welfare, community service, and civic education. The leadership emphasized the need for synergy between local chapters and the national council to ensure inclusivity and shared progress.
In his closing address, President Giwa expressed gratitude to all members for their steadfastness and contributions to the day’s success. He described the congress as a turning point that reflected the resilience and determination of Ibadan students to take ownership of their future. He encouraged continued dedication, unity, and active participation in both union and national affairs.
The meeting ended on a note of renewed optimism, with participants reaffirming their commitment to student representation, civic engagement, and the overall growth of FIBSU. It was clear that the union is positioning itself not only as a voice for Ibadan students but also as a catalyst for national change through youth empowerment and responsible leadership.
