The Kwara State Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Department of Biology Education at the Kwara State College of Education (KWACOED), has organized a special training program for senior secondary school biology teachers to strengthen their fieldwork and practical teaching skills.
The one-day workshop, held at the University of Ilorin Zoological Garden, exposed teachers to hands-on learning techniques aimed at enhancing classroom delivery and improving student performance in line with global educational standards.
Speaking during the training, Dr. Bello Zakariyau Adebayo, Head of the Biology Department at KWACOED and lead facilitator, underscored the significance of the program. He noted that the initiative not only broadened the teachers’ scientific knowledge but also equipped them to adopt innovative teaching methods.
“This is a transformative experience for our teachers. Biology cannot be confined to the classroom alone, and this field-based approach helps bridge the gap between theory and practice,” Dr. Zakariyau said. He commended the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe Olalekan, for providing the platform to strengthen teacher capacity and professional development.
The session also featured contributions from Professor Ganiyu Bello of the University of Ilorin and other facilitators, including zoologist Mr. Sadiq Hakeem Ayodeji. Teachers who participated described the program as the first of its kind in recent years and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn in a practical environment.
The training, officials said, aligns with the vision of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to improve learning outcomes and promote teacher-centered innovations in Kwara schools. Organizers added that participating teachers are expected to step down the knowledge gained to their colleagues, thereby widening the impact across classrooms in the state.
