The Students Union Government of the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET), Yaba, has rejected the recent increase in tuition fees announced by the institution’s management, describing the move as unjust and insensitive.
In a statement jointly signed by the Union President, Akolade Omotuyi, and General Secretary, Favour Animashaun, the students issued a 48 hour ultimatum to the college authorities to reverse the fee hike or face sustained peaceful protests that could disrupt academic activities indefinitely.
“It is disheartening to note that this decision was taken without due consideration for the prevailing economic hardship facing students and their families,” the statement read. “At a time when many are struggling to meet basic academic and personal expenses, such a sudden and significant increase of over ₦50,000 is both unfair and unacceptable.”
The union also alleged that students were charged for services during the previous academic session that were never rendered by the institution.
It called on the college management to reconsider the decision and avoid worsening the financial burden already borne by students and their parents.
According to the union, the resolution to reject the increment was reached at a general congress held on September 23, 2025, with a majority of students and departmental presidents in attendance.
“The student body unanimously rejects the fee increase and demands its immediate reversal. Should the school fail to act within the stipulated 48 hour window, we will have no choice but to embark on a peaceful protest to assert our rights and protect our welfare,” the statement added.
As at the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain comments from the institution’s Director of Public Affairs and the Dean of Student Affairs were unsuccessful.
