The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced plans to embark on a massive renovation of its student hostels following the completion of the 2024/2025 academic session. The renovation project, according to the institution, is part of a broader effort to improve students’ welfare and ensure a more conducive learning and living environment on campus.
In a statement released through the university’s Estate and Works Department, management revealed that the rehabilitation exercise would cover all major halls of residence across the Ugbowo and Ekenhuan campuses. The statement further noted that the project would involve upgrading of key facilities such as plumbing systems, electrical fittings, roofing, and general room maintenance to meet modern standards.
The university advised all students currently occupying hostel spaces to vacate their rooms on or before Monday, October 20, 2025, to allow for the smooth commencement of renovation work. It added that security officers and hostel managers would be on ground to ensure that the evacuation process is orderly and that no personal belongings are left behind during the exercise.
According to the statement, the renovation would be carried out in phases to ensure that all hostels benefit from the upgrade. The administration reiterated that the exercise reflects its commitment to maintaining UNIBEN’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading federal universities in infrastructure and academic excellence.
As part of preparations for the next academic cycle, the management also announced the registration and clearance schedule for both new and returning students. Newly admitted students are expected to commence clearance and registration on November 10, 2025, while returning students are to resume academic activities on November 24, 2025.
The university warned that the clearance process for fresh students must be completed before resumption to avoid delays in lecture attendance and hostel allocation. Returning students were also urged to ensure that all outstanding fees are settled and registration formalities concluded before lectures begin.
Furthermore, management stated that bed-space allocation for the 2025/2026 session would be temporarily adjusted to accommodate the ongoing renovation. Students are therefore advised to stay alert for official updates from the Directorate of Students’ Affairs regarding new accommodation guidelines and hostel reassignments.
While expressing appreciation for the patience and cooperation of students, the Vice Chancellor assured that the completed renovation would significantly improve comfort, hygiene, and safety within the hostels. The administration also highlighted that the project is being undertaken in response to feedback from students and parents who have consistently requested better hostel facilities.
Parents and guardians were encouraged to stay informed through the university’s official communication platforms and to guide their wards in adhering to the new resumption and clearance schedules. The management also urged them to discourage their children from returning to campus before the scheduled date to avoid disruption of renovation activities.
By combining the ongoing infrastructure renewal with a well-structured academic calendar, UNIBEN aims to strengthen its commitment to quality education and student welfare. The institution affirmed that these steps will ensure that the 2025/2026 academic session begins in a well-prepared and improved learning environment for all.
