The 2025 Akoraye Day Football Tournament kicked off in grand style today at the Modakeke Community Sports Field, with Modakeke Islamic Grammar School emerging victorious in the opening match. The spirited side recorded a solid 2–0 triumph over St. Francis Grammar School, setting an early tone for what promises to be an exciting competition.
The match, which drew a large crowd of students, sports enthusiasts, and community leaders, was characterized by high energy and impressive teamwork. Both sides displayed commendable tactical discipline in the first half, holding each other to a goalless stalemate despite several near-miss chances.
However, the second half witnessed a turnaround as Modakeke Islamic Grammar School intensified their offensive play. Their efforts paid off when striker Afeez Akinbode broke the deadlock with a powerful finish in the 58th minute, sending fans into jubilation.
St. Francis Grammar School fought back valiantly but struggled to convert their chances. Their fate was sealed in the 75th minute when Islamic Grammar School’s midfielder, Sulaimon Adeoye, scored a second goal with a well-placed shot that left the opposing goalkeeper helpless.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including the President of the Modakeke Progressive Union (MPU), Professor Peter Olawuni, who performed the official kickoff. In his address, Prof. Olawuni commended the participating schools for their enthusiasm and urged the players to embrace sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the tournament.
He also reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to promoting youth development through sports and education. According to him, the Akoraye Day Football Tournament remains an important avenue for discovering young football talents and fostering unity among students in the Modakeke community.
In an interview with The Nigeria Education News correspondent, the principal of Modakeke Islamic Grammar School, expressed delight over her school’s victory. She praised her players for their resilience and discipline, adding that the win was a reward for weeks of intense training and preparation.
On the other hand, the coach of St. Francis Grammar School, acknowledged his team’s defeat in good faith, noting that the game was a learning experience. He assured that his boys would bounce back stronger in their next fixture.
The correspondent also spoke with some students who shared their excitement about the tournament’s kickoff. A student from Modakeke High School, identified as Tobi, said, “The match was really entertaining. Both teams played well, but Islamic Grammar deserved the win as they were more composed in the second half.”
Another spectator, a final-year student named Kehinde, added, “Events like this make us proud to be part of Modakeke. It’s not just about football; it’s about community pride and togetherness.”
The organizers announced that the tournament will feature multiple knockout rounds involving secondary schools from across Modakeke, with the grand finale scheduled to coincide with the annual Akoraye Day celebrations. Prizes will be awarded to the top-performing teams and outstanding players.
As the competition progresses, expectations are high among residents, students, and alumni.
