Thomas Adewumi University, Oko-Irese, has inducted the first set of graduates from its Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) programme, marking a historic milestone for the institution. The ceremony, held on Monday at the University Auditorium, brought together top officials, professional bodies, parents, and guests to celebrate the newly qualified medical laboratory scientists.
Declaring the event open, the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences, Prof. Emenike O. Irokanulo, praised the resilience and hard work of the inductees. In her address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca O. Oladipo, described the event as “the birth of diagnostic heroes,” reaffirming the University’s commitment to excellence. She highlighted TAU’s rising national ranking and the full accreditation status of the MLS programme.
Prof. Oladipo also announced new institutional milestones, including TAU’s selection as the first Nigerian institution to pilot the FSI–Mentors Without Borders Tech Mentorship Programme and the introduction of a policy requiring graduates to be proficient in at least one UN language. She urged the inductees to uphold precision, compassion, and quality in their professional practice.
Delivering the keynote lecture on “Crossing the Threshold: Navigating the AI Landscape in Laboratory Medicine,” Prof. Olubunkola Oluyege examined the expanding role of artificial intelligence in laboratory science, stressing the need for continuous learning and ethical responsibility.
The highlight of the programme was the oath-taking and induction of the four pioneer graduates, conducted by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), represented by Zonal Coordinator Mr. Okanlawon Sheu, who commended TAU for maintaining high training standards.
The graduates were later admitted into the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Kwara State Chapter. Awards were presented to outstanding students and contributors to the MLS programme, while the best graduating student, Olabisi David, delivered an emotional valedictory speech urging colleagues to pursue excellence.
Chancellor and Founder, Engr. Dr. Johnson Adewumi, delivered the closing remarks, commending the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership and hinting at plans to establish an Entrepreneurship Centre. The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Godwin Adunmo.
