The University of Port Harcourt on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, held its 20th Valedictory Senate Session in honour of retired professors who have rendered distinguished academic and administrative service to the institution over the years.
The special Senate session, which took place on the university campus, brought together members of the university management, Senate, faculty leaders, and invited guests to celebrate the scholarly legacies and contributions of the retired academics.
Instituted in 2011, the Valedictory Senate Session is a formal tradition of the University of Port Harcourt designed to recognise professors at the conclusion of meritorious academic careers. The initiative underscores the institution’s commitment to honouring excellence, dedication, and long-standing service to scholarship and national development.

During the session, detailed citations highlighting the academic journeys, research contributions, administrative roles, and mentorship records of each retired professor were presented. These citations were read by the respective Provosts and Deans of the honourees’ faculties, offering insight into their years of service and impact within and beyond the university.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university paid glowing tributes to the retired professors, commending their commitment to teaching, research, and community service. He described them as pillars of the institution whose intellectual labour and mentorship helped shape generations of students and strengthened the university’s academic reputation.
He further noted that the growth and stability of the University of Port Harcourt over the years were largely sustained by the sacrifices and professionalism of senior academics who devoted their lives to the advancement of knowledge and institutional development.
The ceremony reached its climax with the formal decoration of the retired professors by the Vice-Chancellor. The exercise was carried out with the support of the Registrar of the University, symbolising the official recognition of the professors’ retirement and their enduring place in the history of the institution.
The event served not only as a moment of celebration but also as an inspiration to younger academics, reinforcing the values of excellence, integrity, and service that define the university’s academic culture.
