Heavy construction activities commenced in the early hours of Saturday, 17 January, at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) campus bus-stop, as about five construction trucks loaded with asphalt and other materials arrived alongside finisher asphalt and paver machines to accelerate work on the long-awaited project. The development marks a significant phase in the bus-stop construction sponsored by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The presence of multiple machines and construction workers signaled renewed momentum on the project, which is expected to transform the university’s transport infrastructure. Students and staff who witnessed the early morning operation described it as one of the most coordinated construction efforts seen on campus in recent times.
Recall that Senator Tinubu, while delivering a speech at OAU’s 48th convocation ceremony—where she was conferred with an honorary degree—openly expressed concern over the university’s poor transport system and horticultural state. She pledged to support efforts aimed at modernising these systems for the overall benefit of the institution.

In line with that promise, the First Lady has since donated 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to the university to improve mobility and sustainability on campus. In addition to the buses, several renovation and infrastructure upgrade projects have been executed, with the bus-stop construction currently standing out as one of the most visible ongoing interventions.
Confirming the funding source of the project, the Chief Executive Officer of Aluak Construction Company, Engr. Awobiyi Omotayo, who is overseeing the bus-stop construction, told correspondents of the ICONS Organization that the project is fully funded by Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
“We have been on this project since Friday, 14 November 2025,” Omotayo disclosed. “Once we are done here, we will immediately move to the campus gate to complete the ongoing construction there, and by God’s grace, we will complete all road construction and upgrading projects by the end of this month.”
He added that the scope of work covers not just aesthetic improvements but durable road surfacing and functional design aimed at easing traffic flow and enhancing safety for commuters within the university environment.
Observers have described the intervention as a reflection of responsive leadership and a strong culture of giving back by alumni to their alma mater. Many believe the project will significantly improve daily campus life and help address long-standing infrastructural challenges.
As construction continues, members of the university community remain hopeful that the ongoing projects will be completed on schedule, setting a new standard for transport infrastructure and reinforcing OAU’s status as a leading institution in Nigeria.
