The Federal Government has launched a Smart School Protection Strategy in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to strengthen security architecture across schools nationwide and safeguard learning environments.
The strategy introduces smart security systems, panic alert mechanisms, rapid response frameworks, and enhanced command centres aimed at delivering intelligence-driven protection for schools. The initiative is designed to proactively prevent threats, improve emergency response time, and create safer spaces for teaching and learning.
To ensure effective coordination, a dedicated Department of the Safe School Initiative will oversee national policy implementation, monitoring, and inter-agency collaboration. The NSCDC has been designated as the lead operational agency responsible for on-ground enforcement and rapid intervention.
Authorities noted that the programme responds to significant vulnerabilities within the education sector, revealing that more than 60,000 of Nigeria’s estimated 81,000 schools currently lack adequate security infrastructure — a gap the new strategy seeks to urgently address.
Stakeholders say the protection framework will leverage technology, intelligence gathering, and coordinated field operations to deter criminal activity around schools while restoring confidence among students, parents, and educators.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Federal Government stated that the initiative underscores its resolve to guarantee safe, secure, and uninterrupted access to quality education for every Nigerian child, positioning school safety as a critical pillar of national development.
