The has directed the immediate evacuation of students from its hostels following a sharp deterioration in the security situation in , raising fresh concerns over student safety in the region.
The directive was announced in an official statement issued on Wednesday by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu. According to the statement, the decision was taken in response to escalating violence and instability in areas surrounding the university community.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, , approved the emergency evacuation after reports of near-chaotic incidents within the city heightened fears over the safety of students residing in campus hostels.
To facilitate the process, the , under the leadership of Governor , provided transportation support to ensure the safe movement of students, even within the constraints of the ongoing curfew.
The university management instructed students residing within Jos and its environs to vacate their hostels from 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while those whose parents or guardians live outside the state are scheduled for evacuation beginning 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Despite the evacuation order, the institution assured stakeholders that adequate security personnel had been deployed to safeguard university facilities and prevent any breach during the transition period.
Authorities also appealed to students and members of the university community to remain calm and cooperate fully with the evacuation process, emphasizing that the measure was purely precautionary.
The development is linked to a recent deadly attack in the Angwan Rukuba community, which reportedly resulted in multiple casualties and intensified tensions across Jos and surrounding areas.
Earlier, the Plateau State Government had imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area in an attempt to restore order. Although the curfew was later relaxed to allow limited movement between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., reports indicate that fresh unrest broke out shortly after the adjustment.
