A Nigerian innovator, Emmanuel Ajayi, has been selected as one of the Food Innovation Fellows, a development he describes as a significant step in his mission to deploy technology for sustainable agricultural advancement. His selection, which is supported by a Federal Government-backed grant, underscores growing national interest in innovation-driven solutions to food security challenges.
Ajayi revealed that he would leverage his academic background in Artificial Intelligence and Electrical/Computer Engineering to focus on precision agriculture, an emerging field that integrates smart technologies into farming practices for improved productivity and sustainability.
Speaking on the motivation behind his work, he identified low agricultural productivity as a persistent challenge in developing countries like Nigeria, attributing it to structural and technological gaps within the sector.
According to him, poor monitoring systems, unpredictable climate conditions, inefficient resource utilization, and lack of access to real-time farm data continue to hinder farmers’ output and overall efficiency.
He noted that many farmers still rely heavily on guesswork when making critical decisions regarding irrigation, fertilizer application, and crop monitoring—practices that often lead to reduced yields, wastage of inputs, and heightened food insecurity.
Through the fellowship, Ajayi will be working on integrating Artificial Intelligence and smart systems into agriculture to address these challenges. His focus includes improving crop monitoring processes, optimizing irrigation systems, and enabling farmers to make data-driven decisions based on real-time insights.
He emphasized that such technological interventions have the potential to significantly reduce waste while increasing productivity, thereby contributing to a more efficient agricultural ecosystem.
Ajayi further explained that his broader goal is to help build a climate-smart agricultural system capable of adapting to environmental changes while ensuring consistent food production.
He added that the initiative aligns with global efforts to modernize agriculture through innovation, particularly in regions where traditional practices still dominate farming operations.
Describing the fellowship as a major milestone, Ajayi stated that it reinforces his commitment to working at the intersection of technology, sustainability, energy, and food systems.
He maintained that engineering and Artificial Intelligence remain powerful tools for solving real-world problems, especially in sectors like agriculture that directly impact livelihoods and national development.
