A viral video shared by a student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has drawn public attention to the poor state of hostel facilities at the institution.
The student, identified on TikTok as Justada97, posted a video highlighting what she described as the deplorable condition of toilets and bathrooms in one of the university’s hostels.
In the video, which has been widely circulated on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the student alleged that hostel cleaners had embarked on strike over unpaid salaries for about five months.
She also questioned the declining living conditions in the hostels despite increases in school and accommodation fees.
“Even with the increase of school fees and hostel fees, there is still no improvement in the standard of living in the school. In fact, it depreciates every day,” she said while showing the untidy condition of the facilities.
The student further noted that her father, who previously attended the university, finds it difficult to believe the current situation whenever she describes the hostel environment to him.
Calling for action, she urged relevant authorities including the university management and student leadership to address the issue and ensure the cleaners are paid.
“All the students are asking is that the hostels be clean,” she said, adding that students should go to school to learn rather than live in conditions she likened to a jungle.
The video has since attracted widespread reactions online, with many users expressing concern over the state of student accommodation in public universities.
Some commenters described the conditions as disturbing and unacceptable, while others argued that the situation reflects broader challenges facing infrastructure and maintenance in Nigeria’s higher education system.
As of the time of filing this report, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka had not issued an official response regarding the claims made in the video.
