The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has stepped up efforts to strengthen campus security following a high-level engagement with the Lagos State Police Command.
The university’s management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, at the Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Ikeja on April 14, 2026.
Ogunsola said the visit was aimed at appreciating the longstanding relationship between the university and the police, while also seeking stronger collaboration to address emerging security concerns within and around the campus.
She congratulated the Commissioner on his recent deployment and called for sustained cooperation to reinforce the university’s internal security framework.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted key threats facing the institution, including the activities of land grabbers, rising cases of cultism linked to neighbouring communities, and incidents of online fraud, particularly impersonation scams targeting members of the university community.
She also drew attention to academic efforts within the institution, noting that the university’s Security and Counter-Terrorism programme, domiciled in the Faculty of Law, is designed to address contemporary security challenges.
In response, Fatai reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the university and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
He assured the delegation that the Marine Division of the Lagos State Police Command would intensify surveillance around the university environment to curb criminal activities.
The Commissioner also pledged that the university would have unhindered access to police formations for rapid response and support when needed.
Fatai, who assumed office as the 42nd Commissioner of Police in Lagos State on March 26, said the Command remains committed to sustaining law and order while supporting institutions like UNILAG in creating a safe learning environment.
