There is welcome relief for candidates preparing to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) at Maduka University, Ekwegbe, Nsukka, as the institution has made provision for free hostel accommodation for students writing their exams at its centre.
The initiative is particularly beneficial for candidates scheduled for early morning sessions, especially the 6:30 a.m. slot, which often poses logistical challenges for students travelling from distant locations. By providing accommodation, the university aims to ensure that candidates arrive at the examination venue on time, well-rested, and mentally prepared.
Education stakeholders have long raised concerns about the stress associated with early UTME schedules, including transportation difficulties, safety risks, and fatigue. This intervention by Maduka University is seen as a proactive step toward addressing those concerns and improving candidates’ overall examination experience.
Candidates are advised to take advantage of the opportunity by arriving a day before their examination. For instance, those scheduled for Thursday morning sessions are encouraged to arrive on Wednesday evening to settle into the hostel and avoid last-minute rush or delays.
Beyond convenience, the arrangement also contributes to candidates’ performance, as adequate rest and reduced anxiety are critical factors in high-stakes examinations like UTME.
Parents and guardians have also welcomed the development, noting that it reduces the burden of securing last-minute lodging or arranging early morning transportation for their wards.
As the UTME period approaches, this gesture positions Maduka University among institutions taking practical steps to support candidates, ensuring not just access to examination centres but also a conducive environment for success.
