The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that its newly appointed Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, played a significant role in the early development and implementation of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) system that transformed Nigeria’s examination process.
The revelation came shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved Aina’s appointment as the new Registrar of JAMB, succeeding Professor Is-haq Oloyede whose second tenure is expected to end on July 31, 2026.
In a statement released on Thursday by JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the examination body described Aina as a familiar figure within the Board’s operational structure, noting that he contributed immensely during the formative years of the CBT transition.
According to the Board, Professor Aina was actively involved at a critical period when JAMB began moving away from the traditional paper-and-pencil examination model to a fully digital examination system, a reform that later became one of the most notable changes in Nigeria’s education assessment sector.
“He was actively involved in the early stages of the introduction of the Computer-Based Test system in the Board,” the statement read.
The Board further stated that Aina’s expertise in computer engineering, digital infrastructure, and institutional technology reforms positioned him as one of the professionals who helped shape the technological framework that currently powers JAMB’s nationwide examination operations.
JAMB noted that the introduction of CBT significantly improved examination integrity, reduced cases of malpractice, enhanced efficiency in result processing, and modernised the conduct of entrance examinations across the country.
The Board also emphasised that Aina is not new to the realities and challenges of large-scale examination administration, stressing that his previous engagements with examination bodies and educational technology systems gave him practical experience that would be valuable in leading JAMB into another phase of digital advancement.
Professor Aina, a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, is expected to officially assume office on August 1, 2026.
JAMB described him as a data-driven institutional reform expert with extensive experience in technological systems management and digital transformation processes within public institutions.
The Board also reflected on the contributions of past registrars, stating that JAMB has consistently benefited from leaders with world-class experience who have strengthened the institution’s credibility and operational standards over the years.
“Over the years, the Board has been fortunate to have registrars with world-class experience whose leadership has continued to move the organisation from strength to strength,” the statement added.
Management and staff of the examination body congratulated the incoming registrar on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to sustain and expand the reforms introduced under previous administrations.
Earlier, the Presidency had described Aina as a distinguished academic and systems expert with deep experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reforms.
The Presidency also highlighted his impressive academic background, noting that he holds degrees in Computer Systems Engineering, Internet Computing and Network Security, as well as Digital Signal Processing from institutions in the United Kingdom.
At 39, Aina is set to become the youngest Registrar in the history of JAMB, a development many stakeholders believe could usher in a new era of technological innovation and digital expansion within Nigeria’s tertiary admission system.
