The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed public school teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to suspend academic activities indefinitely following the recent abduction of students and teachers in the area.
The directive, which takes effect from Tuesday, May 26, was issued amid heightened fears over the safety of teachers and learners after armed gunmen reportedly abducted 39 students and seven teachers from schools within the local government area.
In a statement signed by the Oyo State Secretary of the union, Salami Olukayode, the NUT described the incident as traumatic, disturbing, and unacceptable, warning that teachers could no longer continue working under such dangerous conditions.
The union stated that all affected teachers have been instructed to withdraw their services until adequate security arrangements are put in place to guarantee the safety of education workers and students.
According to the statement, the persistent insecurity in the area has created widespread fear, anxiety, and uncertainty among teachers, parents, and pupils, with many now afraid to return to classrooms.
The NUT stressed that the protection of teachers and schoolchildren must remain a top priority for government and security agencies, urging authorities to urgently strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities across the state.
The development has further intensified concerns over the growing insecurity affecting schools in Oyo State and the wider implications for teaching, learning, and access to education in affected communities.
