The University of Abuja has taken another step in its internationalisation drive following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Brazil’s Universidade do Estado da Bahia (UNEB), a development expected to create new opportunities for students, researchers, and academic staff of both institutions.
The agreement, signed in Brasília on May 26, seeks to strengthen collaboration in research, academic exchange, staff development, and knowledge sharing between the two universities.
The MoU was executed by the Rector of Universidade do Estado da Bahia, Professor Adriana dos Santos Marmori Lima, and the University of Abuja’s Director of Advancement and International Linkages, Professor Olanrewaju Aladeitan, who signed on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi.
Under the partnership, both institutions will facilitate student and staff exchange programmes, undertake joint research projects, organise short-term professional training initiatives, and promote the exchange of academic publications, teaching resources, and scholarly materials.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Fawehinmi described the agreement as a strategic milestone in the university’s efforts to expand its global academic presence and expose members of its community to international learning opportunities.
According to him, the partnership will provide a platform for students and lecturers to engage with global perspectives, strengthen research capacity, and build collaborations capable of addressing contemporary challenges through knowledge and innovation.
“This agreement with the Universidade do Estado da Bahia will create significant opportunities for students and staff of both institutions. We look forward to a productive relationship that will advance teaching, research, and academic exchange,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the partnership aligns with the university’s broader vision of fostering international cooperation and creating pathways for academic excellence through cross-border engagement.
Education stakeholders have increasingly identified international partnerships as critical to improving research output, enhancing institutional visibility, and providing students with access to global learning experiences and networks.
University officials disclosed that discussions are already ongoing with four additional Brazilian universities as part of efforts to deepen academic collaboration and strengthen the institution’s global footprint.
The latest agreement underscores the University of Abuja’s growing commitment to international engagement and is expected to broaden opportunities for academic mobility, research collaboration, and innovation-driven learning for students and staff alike.
For students, the partnership offers the prospect of international exposure and cross-cultural learning experiences, while researchers are expected to benefit from collaborative projects capable of attracting wider academic recognition and impact.
As universities across the world increasingly prioritise global partnerships, the University of Abuja’s engagement with Brazilian institutions signals a deliberate effort to position itself within the global higher education community.
