A protest demanding the safe return of abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area was held in Ibadan on Monday, with demonstrators urging government authorities to intensify rescue efforts and rule out negotiations with kidnappers.
The demonstration, led by activist Kayode Babayomi, is drawing attention to concerns over the safety of schools and the continued captivity of the victims, who were abducted during attacks on schools in the area.
Addressing protesters, Babayomi urged government authorities to intensify rescue efforts and cautioned against negotiating with the abductors, arguing that such a move could encourage further attacks and embolden criminal groups.
According to him, yielding to the demands of kidnappers would send the wrong signal and pose a greater security threat to Oyo State and the South-West region.
“We must not legitimise criminality through negotiations. What is required is decisive action to secure the release of the victims and strengthen security around our schools,” he said.

Babayomi also expressed concern over what he described as inadequate responses to earlier warning signs before the attacks, stressing the need for proactive measures to protect schools and communities.
He lamented the reported killing of a school principal during the incident, describing the development as a painful loss to the education sector.
“The loss is heartbreaking. We cannot continue to watch educators and learners become targets of violence,” he said.
The protesters, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, are calling on the Federal and Oyo State governments to prioritise the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers while strengthening security across schools.
They argued that meaningful learning cannot take place in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity and urged authorities to fully implement school safety measures across the state.
Babayomi maintained that the campaign would continue until all abducted victims regain their freedom.
“Our demand is simple: bring back the children and teachers. Every learner deserves a safe environment to study, and every teacher deserves protection while carrying out their duties,” he said.
The protest comes amid growing concerns over attacks on educational institutions across the country and renewed calls from education stakeholders for stronger measures to safeguard schools, students, and teachers.
