The Lagos State University Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA) has continued its efforts to prepare secondary school students for higher education through its Educational Outreach Programme, aimed at promoting academic excellence, career development and responsible citizenship.
The 11th edition of the initiative, themed “Catch Them Early,” was held on Tuesday at Lagos City Senior College, Sabo Yaba, bringing together students from several secondary schools within the education district.
The programme, designed to expose students to opportunities in tertiary education and provide mentorship, featured interactive sessions with academics and professionals from Lagos State University (LASU).
Declaring the event open, the Tutor-General, Mr Olufemi Paseda, represented by Mr Gabriel Ojo, commended the initiative for helping students make informed educational and career decisions at an early stage.
Speaking at the event, the Director of LASUDA, Distinguished Professor Rafiu Okuneye, said the outreach programme was established to ease students’ transition from secondary school to higher education by providing guidance on academic and personal development.
He also acknowledged the support of the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for sustaining programmes that promote educational advancement and community engagement.
During the outreach, students received guidance on university admission processes, career planning, self-development and responsible behaviour.
Dr Omowunmi Bakare introduced participants to the academic structure of Lagos State University, available admission pathways and the role of the Directorate of Advancement in supporting the institution’s growth.
Addressing students on the dangers of distractions, Dr Oluwafunmilayo Ometan encouraged them to remain focused on their educational goals and avoid activities that could hinder their progress.
In another session, the Head of LASU’s Counselling Unit, Dr Joseph Ayeni, urged students to develop resilience, self-awareness and long-term career plans that would help them succeed beyond secondary school.
Professor Simeon Dosunmu, in a motivational presentation, challenged students to embrace determination, discipline and excellence in pursuit of their ambitions.
Students were also cautioned against social vices, including cultism, drug abuse and other behaviours capable of jeopardising their future.
The programme featured a question-and-answer session where participants sought clarification on admission requirements, career choices and personal development strategies.
One of the participating students, Ms Omolola Odunsi of Aje Comprehensive Senior High School, praised Lagos State University for creating a platform that allows secondary school students to interact directly with university academics and professionals.
Participating schools included Lagos City Senior College, Aje Comprehensive Senior High School, Herbert Macaulay Girls Senior High School and Birrel Avenue Senior High School.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered on behalf of the host school’s student leadership, while the Deputy Registrar of LASUDA, Dr Barakat Oyediran, offered the closing prayer.
