The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level female law student, identified as Tomisin Abolarin, raising fresh concerns about the safety of students travelling for academic and religious activities.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the union’s president, Temidayo Adeboye, who said the student was abducted after participating in a religious retreat organised by the Scripture Union Student Fellowship.
According to the statement, Tomisin had travelled for the retreat alongside the National General Director of the fellowship, Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants.
The union explained that the incident occurred during the course of the religious programme, although details surrounding the circumstances of the abduction were still emerging at the time of reporting.
Adeboye described the development as disturbing and called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward ensuring the safe and immediate rescue of the student.
The Students’ Union also appealed to members of the university community to remain calm while authorities work to secure her release and unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The abduction has generated anxiety among students and staff of the institution, with many expressing concerns over the increasing security challenges affecting travellers and young Nigerians across different parts of the country.
Student groups have also begun calling for stronger security measures and improved protection for students participating in off-campus academic, social, and religious activities.
While the union did not provide further details regarding the location of the retreat or possible contacts with the abductors, it assured students that it was actively engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders on the matter.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the vulnerability of students to kidnapping and other security threats in different parts of Nigeria, particularly during interstate travel.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not publicly released an official statement on the abduction, while efforts to secure the student’s freedom were said to be ongoing.
The University of Ibadan community has continued to express hope for the safe return of Tomisin Abolarin, with students, alumni, and well-wishers offering prayers and support for her family during the difficult period.
