Determination, preparation and an unwavering passion for mathematics have earned Adenike Adeyeri, a 400-level Actuarial Science student of Redeemer’s University, national recognition after she successfully passed the highly competitive Financial Mathematics professional examination conducted by the Society of Actuaries (SOA), United States, placing herself among a select group of young Nigerians making remarkable strides in the globally respected profession.
Adeyeri’s success has been celebrated within the university community as a major academic milestone, not only for her personal achievement but also for further strengthening Redeemer’s University’s growing reputation for producing students capable of competing successfully on the international stage.
Her journey to the prestigious accomplishment began with what appeared to be a simple classroom opportunity. A lecturer in the Department of Finance shared information about a scholarship examination organised by the Nigerian Actuarial Society (NAS), the country’s foremost professional body for actuaries and actuarial students. Motivated by the opportunity, Adeyeri sat for the highly competitive selection exercise and emerged as one of only five students nationwide selected by the society for sponsorship.
The sponsorship enabled her to register for and sit the Financial Mathematics professional examination of the Society of Actuaries, one of the world’s most respected actuarial certification bodies. Passing the examination represents a significant step toward becoming a fully qualified actuary and places her among a small number of Nigerian undergraduates already progressing through the rigorous international professional certification pathway.
The outstanding performance has equally brought fresh recognition to Redeemer’s University, particularly the Department of Finance, whose lecturers have continued to mentor students towards global professional excellence in actuarial education.
In recognition of the feat, Adeyeri, accompanied by the Head of the Department of Finance, Dr. Taofeek Afolabi, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Prof. Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, where her achievement was formally celebrated by the university management.
Speaking on her accomplishment, the young scholar disclosed that her professional journey is far from over, revealing that she has already secured sponsorship to attempt the next stage of the Society of Actuaries’ certification process.
“I have also received sponsorship to write the next stage of the SOA examination, which is Probability,” she said with excitement.
Adeyeri acknowledged the demanding nature of the professional examinations, explaining that actuarial certification requires resilience, discipline and long-term commitment.
“It is a very difficult examination. Everyone has their preferences. Many students studying Actuarial Science may decide not to become practising actuaries. Some prefer careers in insurance, accounting or other professional fields, but I have chosen to continue on the actuarial pathway,” she explained.
For the graduating student, the ultimate ambition is to attain the highly coveted status of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a distinction reserved for professionals who successfully complete the series of rigorous examinations and satisfy other professional requirements.
“My dream is to become a Fellow. You become a Fellow when you have completed all the examinations, and that is the goal I am working towards,” she said confidently.
Adeyeri attributed her love for the discipline to the strong academic influence of her family, especially her father and elder brother, both of whom encouraged her interest in Actuarial Science from an early age.
“My father introduced me to the course, and interestingly, my brother also studied Actuarial Science here at Redeemer’s University. Their guidance inspired me to pursue the same path,” she recalled.
She revealed that her passion for mathematics was evident long before she entered the university. Despite being a commercial student in secondary school, she deliberately studied Further Mathematics to sharpen her analytical abilities in preparation for her future career.
“Even in secondary school, I chose to study Further Mathematics because I never wanted to lose my mathematical skills. Looking back now, I truly believe it was part of my destiny to study Actuarial Science,” she said.
As she prepares for the next stage of the Society of Actuaries’ certification process, her journey stands as a testament to how determination, mentorship and hard work can open doors to global professional recognition.
