The Enugu State Government has approved scholarships for more than 760 students and teachers under its 2025/2026 Local Scholarship Scheme, reinforcing the state’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and accelerating human capital development across the state.
The scholarship initiative, approved by Governor Peter Mbah, will benefit undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as public school teachers drawn from the 17 local government areas of Enugu State. Education stakeholders have described the programme as one of the state’s most significant investments in academic excellence and workforce development in recent years.
The Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loans Board, Chukwuemeka Mbah, disclosed the development in a statement issued in Enugu, explaining that the beneficiaries comprise over 500 undergraduate students, 100 postgraduate students and 160 teachers in the public education system.
According to him, successful applicants who passed the Computer-Based Test have already begun receiving text messages and emails inviting them for verification and documentation, with the exercise being conducted on a local government-by-local government basis to ensure an orderly and transparent process.
Mbah said the scholarship programme reflects Governor Peter Mbah’s determination to invest in education as the foundation for sustainable development, noting that the administration remains committed to empowering young people and strengthening the state’s skilled workforce through continuous educational support.
He explained that the initiative was designed to ensure that financial challenges do not deny deserving students access to higher education while also providing opportunities for teachers to improve their professional qualifications and classroom effectiveness.
Encouraging beneficiaries to complete the verification process promptly, the Executive Secretary urged successful candidates to respond to official notifications without delay to facilitate the release of their scholarship awards.
He further assured residents that the programme would continue beyond the current phase, saying, “More beneficiaries will be captured in the next phase of the scholarship programme. It’s open to the people of Enugu State, and I want to urge our people to continue to apply.”
He added, “This is not the time to say you’re unable to get quality education because of funding. The governor has made it easy for our people to access free, quality education.”
The latest scholarship award forms part of Governor Mbah’s broader education reform agenda, which has prioritised increased investment in school infrastructure, digital learning, teacher capacity development, education financing and expanded access to quality learning opportunities for residents across the state.
Education analysts believe the inclusion of teachers alongside undergraduate and postgraduate students demonstrates the state’s recognition that improving educational outcomes requires sustained investment not only in learners but also in the professional development of educators who shape future generations.
With verification already underway and additional beneficiaries expected in subsequent phases, the scholarship scheme is expected to provide relief for hundreds of families, strengthen tertiary education participation and contribute to the development of a highly skilled workforce capable of driving Enugu State’s long-term socio-economic transformation.
