Four exceptional Nigerian students are set to fly the nation’s flag at the 2026 World Spelling Bee Championship in Shanghai, China, marking Nigeria’s debut at the prestigious global competition and showcasing the country’s growing reputation for academic excellence.
The young ambassadors earned their places on the world stage after impressive performances at the 2026 African Spelling Bee Championship held in Harare, Zimbabwe, where Team Nigeria delivered an outstanding performance against contestants from across the continent. Their qualification represents another milestone in Nigeria’s expanding participation in international academic competitions.
The four students are Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Chinedu Great Okediachi of Madonna International School, Asaba; and siblings Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin. Their selection followed months of rigorous preparation and success at both the national and continental levels, where they distinguished themselves through exceptional spelling ability, vocabulary and language proficiency.
The quartet will represent Nigeria at the World Spelling Bee Championship scheduled to hold from July 10 to 20, 2026, competing against outstanding young spellers from different countries. Their participation is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s profile in global academic contests while inspiring more learners to embrace literacy, language development and intellectual excellence.
Speaking on the significance of the competition, organisers noted that the championship provides an international platform for students to demonstrate academic excellence, cultural exchange and critical thinking. They explained that participation at the global level reflects the quality of preparation undertaken by the Nigerian representatives and the commitment of their schools, teachers and families to academic development.
The students’ achievements have also attracted support from government officials and well-wishers in different states. Earlier, the Ekiti State Government sponsored Oluwadamilola Adeolu’s participation after she emerged African spelling champion, while the Delta State Government supported Chinedu Great Okediachi’s trip following his remarkable performance at the continental championship. Similar appeals have been made to assist the Kwara-based siblings in their journey to China.
Education advocates have described the students’ qualification as evidence of the immense academic potential within Nigerian schools, noting that spelling competitions help learners strengthen reading culture, vocabulary, communication skills and confidence. They added that sustained investment in literacy programmes and academic competitions would encourage more students to pursue excellence beyond the classroom.
As the four young scholars prepare to compete on the world stage, they carry not only the hopes of their schools and families but also the aspirations of millions of Nigerian learners. Their participation is expected to inspire a new generation of students to embrace academic excellence and demonstrate that Nigerian children can compete successfully with their peers anywhere in the world.
