The University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier university, has entered a new chapter in its distinguished history with the appointment of Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as its 14th Vice-Chancellor. His emergence followed a competitive selection process involving eight candidates and was announced by the Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Chief Adebisi Akande, CFR.
For many within Nigeria’s academic community, Professor Olapegba’s appointment represents the culmination of nearly three decades of scholarship, university administration, research excellence and institutional service. Unlike many university leaders whose careers are defined solely by classroom teaching, Olapegba has built a reputation as a researcher, administrator, mentor, fundraiser and psychologist whose work has shaped both the University of Ibadan and the wider social science community.
Born 56 years ago, Professor Olapegba becomes one of the youngest academics in recent decades to assume the office of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Ibadan. His appointment places him among a distinguished line of administrators who have led the institution since its establishment in 1948 and comes at a time when Nigerian universities face increasing demands for improved research output, digital transformation, global competitiveness, funding diversification and academic innovation.
An Academic Journey Rooted in the University of Ibadan
Professor Olapegba’s educational journey has been deeply intertwined with the University of Ibadan. He obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Psychology in 1997 before earning a Master’s degree in Social and Personality Psychology in 1999. Determined to deepen his expertise in behavioural sciences, he later completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Social Psychology in 2008, all from the same institution he is now set to lead.
Beyond his formal academic qualifications, he has strengthened his professional profile through specialised certifications, including an Academic Diploma in International Boundary and Borderlands Studies, Chartered Psychologist status and professional certifications in Mediation and Conciliation, reflecting his multidisciplinary approach to leadership, conflict management and behavioural science.
Building a Career Around Human Behaviour and Social Development
As an Applied Social Psychologist, Professor Olapegba has dedicated much of his academic career to understanding how human behaviour influences societal development. His research spans public health, family relationships, environmental psychology, domestic violence, sexual harassment, victimisation, HIV/AIDS awareness, behavioural change, quality of life and health-related decision-making.
His work has not only contributed to academic literature but has also provided culturally relevant psychological measurement tools and behavioural models used in understanding social issues within Nigeria and beyond. Over the years, he has authored more than 130 scholarly publications, including books, peer-reviewed journal articles, monographs, book chapters and other academic works that continue to enrich psychological research.
A Distinguished Administrator
Long before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olapegba had established himself as one of the University’s most experienced administrators.
His leadership journey includes serving as Undergraduate Coordinator, Postgraduate Coordinator, Examination Officer, Deputy Postgraduate Coordinator of CEPACS, Sub-Dean (Postgraduate), Dean of the Faculty of the Social Sciences, Pioneer Director of the Office of Alumni Relations, Chairman of the University’s landmark UI@75 Anniversary Committee and Representative of the Senate on the Governing Council.
In November 2023, he was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), a role in which he coordinated several strategic administrative activities and institutional development initiatives.
His administrative experience also extends beyond the University of Ibadan. He has served on the Governing Council of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, and currently sits on the Governing Council of Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan. He is equally a member of the Governing Board of the Pan African University Institute of Life and Earth Sciences, including Health and Agriculture.
Champion of Research and Academic Excellence
Professor Olapegba has consistently demonstrated strong capacity in research leadership and grant acquisition. Throughout his academic career, he has secured several competitive research grants, including the International Congress of Psychology Change Fellowship Research Grant, University of Ibadan Senate Research Grant, Moment of Change Research Grant, multiple TETFund Institution-Based Research Grants and several international conference travel grants.
He has also supervised numerous doctoral theses, M.Phil. dissertations, master’s projects and undergraduate research works, contributing significantly to the development of future psychologists and researchers. In addition, he regularly serves as an external examiner, assessor for professorial appointments and consultant to universities within and outside Nigeria.
Driving Institutional Development Through Partnerships
Perhaps one of Professor Olapegba’s most notable achievements has been his role in strengthening alumni engagement and attracting private-sector support for the University of Ibadan.
As Chairman of the University’s 75th Anniversary Committee and later Director of the Office of Alumni Relations, he spearheaded several landmark fundraising initiatives that attracted substantial investments into the institution.
Among these were a ₦200 million scholarship endowment from RAMS Charity Foundation, a ₦300 million office complex for the Faculty of the Social Sciences, a ₦20 million scholarship fund from International Energy Services Limited, a ₦30 million scholarship donation from Providus Bank, a $50,000 scholarship support facilitated through an international benefactor, the renovation of Kuti Hall through alumni contributions valued at over ₦23 million, as well as the facilitation of a multimillion-naira research facility through collaboration with International Energy Services Limited.
These initiatives have been widely recognised as examples of successful university-industry and alumni partnerships capable of reducing dependence on government funding while improving institutional infrastructure and student support.
Professional Recognition
Professor Olapegba’s contributions have earned him several honours and fellowships from respected professional organisations. He is a Fellow of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria, the Nigerian Psychological Association, the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies and the Society for Peace Studies and Practice, among others.
These recognitions reflect his influence not only within psychology but also across interdisciplinary fields involving peacebuilding, social development and conflict resolution.
A New Era for Nigeria’s Premier University
As Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba prepares to assume office as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, expectations are high that his blend of academic excellence, administrative experience, research leadership and proven ability to attract strategic partnerships will further strengthen the institution’s reputation as one of Africa’s foremost centres of learning.
His appointment comes at a period when Nigerian universities are navigating complex challenges, including funding constraints, technological advancement, global university rankings, research commercialisation, graduate employability and international collaboration. His extensive experience across teaching, administration, fundraising and institutional governance is expected to position the University of Ibadan for sustained growth and greater global visibility.
For many observers, Professor Olapegba’s emergence is not merely the appointment of another vice-chancellor; it represents the rise of an academic whose career has been defined by scholarship, service, innovation and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of higher education in Nigeria.
