The Lagos State Government has commenced the distribution of tablet devices to junior secondary schools under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) Programme as part of efforts to strengthen technology-driven education across the state.
The initiative, implemented through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, is a partnership between the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), aimed at improving education management and promoting data-driven decision-making.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony in Alausa, the Director of Project, Planning and Research, Mr. Opeyemi Martins, disclosed that each participating junior secondary school would receive 30GB of monthly data from Airtel to support internet access and enhance teaching and learning.
Martins said the connectivity support would enable schools to maximise the use of the digital devices for educational and administrative purposes.
Also speaking, the Director of Basic Education Services, Mrs. Toyin Oyedele, reminded school administrators that the tablets remain government property and should be properly maintained and handed over to successors whenever principals or teachers are transferred.
She emphasised that the devices were provided to support institutional development rather than personal use.
In the first phase of the programme, 160 tablet devices were distributed to selected junior secondary schools, with the government announcing plans to extend the initiative to all junior secondary schools across Lagos State.
The state government said the deployment of the tablets would improve data collection, monitoring, reporting and educational planning, while supporting more effective school administration and better learning outcomes.
According to the ministry, the BESDA initiative reinforces Lagos State’s commitment to leveraging technology to strengthen accountability, improve education management and deliver quality learning opportunities for every child.
