Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has once again demonstrated its academic strength in engineering and petroleum education after emerging champion of the 2026 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Africa Region PetroBowl Championship, successfully defending the continental title against leading universities from across Africa.
The victory, recorded at the prestigious competition held in Kenya, further consolidates OAU’s reputation as one of the continent’s foremost institutions for petroleum-related education, research and professional training.
The annual PetroBowl Championship is one of the flagship academic competitions organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). It brings together outstanding university students from different African countries to test their knowledge of petroleum engineering, geology, energy resources, drilling operations, production systems, reservoir engineering, industry regulations and other technical aspects of the oil and gas sector.
This year’s championship attracted strong participation from universities across Africa, making OAU’s successful title defence a significant achievement for both the institution and Nigeria’s higher education system.
Representing the university was a five-member team comprising students from the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Geology, disciplines that play central roles in the exploration, production and sustainable management of petroleum resources.
Leading the team was Oluwanifemi Oladunjoye, a 500-level student of Chemical Engineering, who served as captain. Other members included Quadri Adekunle, a 300-level Chemical Engineering student; Amoo Covenant, a 500-level Chemical Engineering student; Folusho Mercy, a 300-level Chemical Engineering student; and Taiwo Mary Ajayi, a 400-level Geology student.
Throughout the competition, the OAU representatives displayed exceptional technical knowledge, analytical reasoning and teamwork, outperforming rival institutions to retain the championship trophy.
The achievement reflects the quality of academic training and practical exposure available to students at the university, particularly within programmes related to engineering, earth sciences and energy studies.
