The Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen security in schools, with the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Defence agreeing to deepen collaboration under the Safe Schools Initiative to protect learners and educational institutions across the country.
The development followed a meeting between the Minister of Education and the Minister of Defence, where both ministries reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe environments for teaching and learning.
According to the Minister of Education, protecting students remains a top priority of the Federal Government, stressing that learners can only realise their full potential in an environment where they feel secure.
He noted that education quality assurance, including the safety of learners, is one of the six strategic pillars of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), the Federal Government’s roadmap for reforming the education sector.
The minister explained that while universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country have remained relatively secure, the government is determined to stay ahead of emerging security threats, particularly those occurring outside school campuses.
He said discussions with the Defence Ministry focused on practical measures to improve collaboration between the education sector and security agencies, including strengthening intelligence sharing and reinforcing existing mechanisms under the Safe Schools Initiative.
The renewed partnership is expected to improve coordination between the Federal Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Defence and other security agencies in safeguarding schools and responding more effectively to potential security challenges.
The Safe Schools Initiative was established to enhance the security of schools nationwide following years of attacks on educational institutions, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria. The programme combines infrastructure improvements, early warning systems, community engagement and security interventions aimed at preventing disruptions to learning.
The latest collaboration comes amid broader reforms by the Federal Government to strengthen school safety. Earlier this week, the Minister of Education disclosed that the Safe Schools Initiative had been transferred from the Federal Ministry of Finance to the Federal Ministry of Education, with a dedicated department established to coordinate implementation and oversight nationwide.
The minister expressed appreciation to the Defence Ministry for its continued support, describing school security as a shared national responsibility that requires sustained collaboration among government institutions and security agencies.
He added that the administration remains committed to ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to quality education in a safe and secure learning environment, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
